Where does Valentine's Day come from?
We have the Romans to thank for the tradition of Valentine's Day, both the celebration itself and even the name. There are several different stories in history, although the most talked about is that of a Priest named Valentine who, during the third century, arranged marriages in secret. The cupid of his time it seems. The ancient Roman Emperor at that time believed that married men made bad soldiers therefore banned marriage and subsequently executed the priest. Valentine was later honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day.
Another story is that the Valentine's Day tradition descends from an ancient Roman festival, during which boys would choose girl's names from a box and partner for the duration of the festival, sometimes getting married.
However it originated, St Valentine's Day is most certainly about love. Not cards, presents, flowers... love. It's a time to enjoy the company of those we love, whether romantic or not.
